Don Mariano, cura bondadoso de ideas antiguas, convive con sus feligreses, con los que no acaba de conectar plenamente, en una barriada madrileña de clase trabajadora. A instancias de sus superiores, don Mariano intenta acercarse de diversos modos a sus feligreses. Un belén viviente será el último de sus intentos por ganarse a la gente.
